William J Martone, MD MS

 Brief Biography


Dr.  Martone has had extensive experience in governmental, non-profit, and  pharmaceutical organizations.  Most recently, from 2009 to 2013 he was  Senior Vice President and head of Medical and Scientific Affairs at  MedImmune.  From 2003 to 2009 Dr. Martone was head of Medical Affairs,  Clinical Research, and Epidemiology/Pharmacovigilance at Cubist  Pharmaceuticals.  Prior to his work in the pharmaceutical industry, Dr.  Martone was Senior Executive Director of the National Foundation for  Infectious Diseases (NFID), a non-profit foundation providing public and  professional education about, and support of research in, infectious  diseases. Dr. Martone began his public health career as an epidemic  intelligence service officer at the United States Public Health  Service's (USPHS) Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  He  held various positions at CDC and in 1987 he was appointed the director  of the Hospital Infections Program.  He retired from CDC and the  USPHS at the rank Captain in 1998.

A  former president and current fellow of the Society for Healthcare  Epidemiology of America, Dr. Martone is also a fellow of the Infectious  Diseases Society of America,  a member of the American College of  Physicians, and a member of numerous other professional scientific  organizations.  He has served as a consultant to the American Hospital  Association, the US National Institutes of Health, the US Food and Drug  Administration, and pharmaceutical companies.

Dr.  Martone received a bachelor of science degree in chemistry from Union  College (Schenectady, NY), a medical degree from New York University  School of Medicine (New York, NY), and a master of science degree in  hospital epidemiology from the University of Virginia Graduate School of  Arts and Sciences (Charlottesville, VA).  He received his internal  medicine and infectious diseases training at the University of Virginia,  has authored or coauthored over 75 research papers and book chapters,  and is a recipient of numerous awards and honors including the USPHS  Meritorious Service Medal.  Dr. Martone is board certified in internal  medicine and infectious diseases and holds medical licenses in Virginia  and Georgia.
